My journey in France...

The Morbihan

The Morbihan (september 24th 2000). The day had begun well. It has bodied thereafter; some unexpected events forced me to change my plans. Everything came back to normal afterwards. The end of the day was fully appreciated.

The Morbihan is one of the five Britain's departements. That's the one that spreads all along the southern coast. The two main cities are Lorient and Vannes.

To reach the Morbihan from Rennes we go south-west. Two successive highway lead to Vannes.

Touristically speaking, Quiberon is a strategic point given its location. From Quiberon we can take the ferry to go to Belle-Île. That is my outing's main motivation today.

I left Chartre around 9h00 and we arrived at Quiberon around 11h30. We looked for the local touristic office, matter of knowing when the ferry's schedule and what were the prices. The office was closed; it starts bad. We decided to get some info by ourselves.

But first we had to park the car somewhere. Not surprisingly, there was no parking near the piers, neither in town. Finaly, we found some place at about 15 min by walk. Now it's 12h30.

The sky was generaly blue, except where we were: there was a large rain cloud. And what has to happen indeed happened. We decide to get cover under a restaurant's awning. We get hungry! We decide to get in and have a lunch.

At 14h00, almost finished eating, we hear a boat's horn. We think: "Ha! It's coming!". We look outside: "@#$%! It's leaving!". "Anyway!", we taught we would take the next one. At the ferry port, they tell us that the next one is at 17h00, and it is precisely at that hour that the touristic sightseeing stops at Belle-Île.

So, too bad for Belle-Île. I'm gonna come back for sure. Let's benifit from the rest of the day to visit the area. We first ride up along the peninsula by running the western side of the coast.

As you can see it was breezy on that day...

The following 2 panoramic pictures were taken practicaly back-to-back: that's the tightest place of the peninsula (western and eastern sides respectively):

After that we left for Lorient in order to discover anything interesting. Apparently the place is forbidden to anyone has a Ford:

On the wharves there are some important industrial buildings: we learned they were deserted hangars used to build French submarines. The place looked nicer on the other side of the river.

We thus went to Port-Louis. Once arrived we got to close the beach and we took a fresh beer quietly.

Just next to where we were there was a fortress.

The day was ending se we got back home.
