Alkmaar

Yet another outing

Alkmaar is an important city in the province of "Noord-Holland" (i.e. Northen Holland). Alkmaar is a city well-known for its cheese market ("kaas" in Dutch). Already in the 14th century the cheese makers came here to officially "weigh" their cheeses. The weight determined the prices.

In Dutch (the language spoken in the Netherlands), there are no diacritics like in French. Instead they double the vowels. So a word with a single "a" is pronounced differently from a word with "aa".
